Tiger Woods announced on Tuesday that he is stepping away from golf to seek treatment and focus on his health following a rollover crash in Florida last week. The 15-time major champion pleaded not guilty to DUI charges, including driving under the influence, property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful test.
Woods released a statement on social media, acknowledging the seriousness of the situation and emphasizing his commitment to recovery. He stated, 'I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.'
The incident occurred on Friday when Woods' Land Rover clipped a truck and rolled over. Police reported that Woods appeared lethargic, sweating profusely, and had extremely dilated pupils. A Breathalyzer test showed no alcohol, but two hydrocodone pills were found in his possession. Woods admitted to taking prescription medication earlier in the day.
The PGA Tour expressed support for Woods, stating, 'Tiger Woods is a legend of our sport whose impact extends far beyond his achievements on the course. But above all else, Tiger is a person, and our focus is on his health and well-being.'
Woods' future participation in the upcoming Masters tournament, scheduled for next month, is now uncertain. Before the crash, he had not ruled out playing. His ex-wife, Elin Nordegren, reportedly expressed concern for his well-being following the accident.
This is not Woods' first legal or health-related incident. He has a history of car accidents, including a 2017 DUI arrest and a 2021 crash that left him with severe leg injuries. Some have called for the PGA to reconsider his potential role as the next U.S. Ryder Cup captain due to these recurring issues.
