A Georgia man has been arrested in the 1984 rape and murder of Sandra Kaye Davis, a 22-year-old woman whose body was found strangled beside a home in Waycross. Freddie Lee Granger Jr., 68, was charged with one count each of rape, malice murder, aggravated assault, and two counts of felony murder. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) announced the arrest on March 31, 2026, after DNA technology linked Granger to the decades-old case.
The Waycross Police Department discovered Davis’s body on September 1, 1984, near Kollock Street. Authorities initially struggled to solve the case, which remained cold for years. The GBI assisted local officials in the investigation, and advancements in DNA forensics ultimately led to Granger’s identification. He was booked into the Ware County Jail following his arrest.
Multiple law enforcement agencies collaborated on the case, including the Waycross Police Department, Ware County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Department of Community Supervision, and GBI’s Cold Case Unit. Despite the arrest, the investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are appealing for additional information from the public.
