A 61-year-old man has been indicted in connection with two murders linked to the infamous 'Texas Killing Fields,' a stretch of land near Houston where the bodies of about 30 women and girls were found over decades. James Dolphs Elmore Jr. was charged with manslaughter and felony tampering with evidence in the death of 16-year-old Laura Miller, as well as tampering with evidence in the murder of 30-year-old Audrey Cook, according to the Galveston County District Attorney's office. The indictment marks a significant development in a decades-old cold case that has drawn national attention, including a Netflix documentary and coverage on CBS News' '48 Hours.'
Miller's father, Tim Miller, revealed that he had met Elmore 20 to 30 times over the past four years, often discussing the case. Elmore allegedly shared details about the killings that were not publicly known, though Miller said he did not suspect him at the time. 'You don’t think this guy could be involved,' Miller told reporters. 'You’re thinking, here’s somebody who wants to help.'
Elmore made his first court appearance on Thursday, where his bond was set at $3 million, including $1.5 million for the manslaughter charge and $750,000 for each tampering charge. A trial date has been set for August 31. The 'Texas Killing Fields' have been a subject of fascination and horror since the 1970s, with the remote area described as a 'perfect place for killing somebody and getting away with it' by federal agent Don Ferrarone.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities have not ruled out further charges or connections to other unsolved murders in the area.
