Delta Air Lines has raised its checked baggage fees by $10 for the first two bags and $50 for the third, effective April 8, 2026. This follows similar increases by United Airlines and JetBlue, as airlines grapple with surging jet fuel prices driven by the ongoing U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran. The fee for the first checked bag on domestic and short-haul international flights will now be $45, while the second bag will cost $55, and the third will be $200. Delta stated the changes reflect 'evolving global conditions and industry dynamics,' though elite members, first-class passengers, and active-duty military will still receive free checked bags.
Jet fuel prices have risen sharply since the conflict began, with the International Air Transport Association reporting a 132% increase from last year. Airlines have also raised ticket prices and introduced fuel surcharges to offset costs. Experts advise travelers to book refundable fares in case prices climb further.
