Stefano Gabbana, 63, has stepped down as chairman of Dolce & Gabbana, the fashion house he co-founded with Domenico Dolce in 1985. The resignation, effective January 1, marks a significant shift in the brand's leadership, though Gabbana will retain his creative role. Alfonso Dolce, Domenico Dolce's brother, was named the new chairman later that month, according to company filings with the Milan chamber of commerce.
The move was described by Dolce & Gabbana as 'a natural evolution of its organizational structure and governance.' Reports from Bloomberg suggest Gabbana is considering options to exit his 40% stake in the company, estimated to be worth £1.5 billion. The brand has faced controversies in the past, including a 2018 incident where a racially insensitive ad led to the cancellation of a Shanghai show. Gabbana also faced backlash in 2015 for comments criticizing same-sex parenthood.
Despite these challenges, Dolce & Gabbana remains a prominent name in fashion, known for its distinctive blend of baroque motifs, religious iconography, and Hollywood glamour. The label has dressed celebrities such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Penelope Cruz, solidifying its influence in the industry.
