Chris Payton-Jones, a 30-year-old former NFL defensive back, died in a car accident in Alachua County, Florida, on Saturday night. The collision occurred when his sedan struck a pickup truck head-on, according to News 4 Jacksonville. Payton-Jones was the sole fatality, while the three occupants of the truck sustained only minor injuries.
Payton-Jones played for four NFL teams—Detroit Lions, Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans, and Las Vegas Raiders—between 2018 and 2022, accumulating 48 tackles and seven passes defended in 29 games. After his NFL career, he joined the XFL's Seattle SeaDragons and the UFL's St. Louis Battlehawks from 2022 to 2024. He had recently announced his retirement from football.
A standout at the University of Nebraska, Payton-Jones was named All-Big Ten honorable mention in 2016. His high school coach, Adam Geis, described him as a 'special and genuine person' with an elite work ethic. 'He was one of my all-time favorites,' Geis told News4. 'The kid never missed a workout, never missed practice, and never wanted to come off the field. Everyone loved him.'
Payton-Jones also ran a YouTube channel, Flashflix, focusing on local sports in his hometown of Jacksonville. He was frequently seen supporting Sandalwood High School football games, where he had played as a three-star prospect before signing with Nebraska.
Tributes poured in on social media following his death, honoring his legacy both on and off the field.
