A woman was shot and killed by police Tuesday morning at an Omaha, Nebraska Walmart after allegedly cutting a 3-year-old child with a knife during an attempted kidnapping. The child, who suffered a large cut across his face, was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover, according to Omaha Deputy Police Chief Scott Gray.
Officers responded to the Walmart located at 72nd and Pine Street around 9:13 a.m. after receiving a 911 call. When they arrived approximately seven minutes later, they encountered the woman holding a knife to the child outside the store. Police said the woman had taken the child from a caretaker inside the store and forced them to walk outside.
Gray stated that officers gave the woman commands, but she began swiping the knife at the child, cutting him. At least one officer then fired their weapon, killing the suspect. No officers were injured in the incident. The woman's identity has not been released, and police said there is no indication she knew the child or caretaker. The knife may have been shoplifted from the store.
Walmart condemned the violence in a statement, saying, 'Violence like this is unacceptable,' and that they are cooperating with police in the investigation.
