Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) on Tuesday denied being the man in a viral video with Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), calling the claims "lies." Gallego, a close friend of Swalwell, has faced scrutiny after multiple women accused Swalwell of sexual misconduct, including assault. Swalwell resigned from Congress and dropped his gubernatorial bid amid the allegations.
Gallego’s Defense
Gallego told reporters he had no knowledge of Swalwell’s alleged misconduct, despite their long-standing friendship. "I was manipulated, I was lied to," he said, acknowledging he initially defended Swalwell before the allegations surfaced. Gallego claimed Swalwell deceived him, including about rumors of inappropriate behavior.
Swalwell’s Downfall
Swalwell’s resignation followed accusations from at least five women, including a former staffer who alleged two sexual assaults. Gallego, who chaired Swalwell’s 2020 presidential campaign, said he trusted Swalwell due to their families’ close ties. "Our kids were in baseball camp together," Gallego noted, but added that Swalwell "led a double life."
Video Controversy
A video circulating online showed Swalwell with a woman in a compromising situation, with an unidentified man nearby. Gallego denied being in the video, calling it a "political attack." He also rejected claims of inappropriate behavior toward staff or others.
Political Fallout
Gallego’s association with Swalwell has raised questions about his 2028 presidential ambitions. He admitted his judgment was clouded by friendship but insisted he had no prior knowledge of misconduct. Swalwell has denied the allegations, though he stepped down amid mounting pressure.
