Jessica McClure Morales, known as 'Baby Jessica' after her 1987 rescue from a well, was arrested on Saturday in Midland, Texas, following a reported domestic disturbance. The 40-year-old was charged with assault causing bodily injury involving family violence and later released after posting bond.
Authorities responded to a residence just before 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, according to arrest records. The Midland County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrest but provided limited details about the incident. An arrest affidavit, which could take up to ten days to process, is expected to provide more information.
Morales gained international attention in 1987 when, at 18 months old, she fell into an 8-inch-wide well at her aunt’s home in Midland. The 58-hour rescue effort captivated the nation, with rescuers drilling a parallel shaft and horizontal tunnel through rock to reach her. Paramedic Robert O’Donnell eventually navigated the tunnel to free her, and she was rushed to a local hospital.
The rescue was broadcast live on major networks, drawing global attention. Then-President Ronald Reagan commented on the event, noting its widespread impact. Morales’ ordeal was later depicted in a 1989 TV movie and referenced in popular culture, including an episode of The Simpsons.
