At least three students were injured in a shooting near the University of Iowa early Sunday morning, according to police. The Iowa City Police Department responded to the 100 block of East College Street in downtown Iowa City at approximately 1:46 a.m. after receiving a report of a large fight. Officers who arrived on the scene heard gunfire.
Video circulating on social media appears to show a confrontation ahead of the shooting that seemed to involve a large group of people. Several individuals could be seen punching and kicking others as bystanders urged them to stop. Additional video shows a large crowd fleeing the scene after gunfire erupted.
First responders reported at least four people with gunshot wounds, according to scanner traffic recordings. Police confirmed that multiple victims were transported to local hospitals, but did not specify the total number of people hurt. University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson confirmed that three students were injured and urged the campus community to avoid the area.
No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds offered all the state’s resources for assistance in the investigation, calling the incident a "senseless act of violence."
The Iowa City Police Department stated in a press release that multiple victims were taken to area hospitals, but no information on their conditions is available at this time.
