Award-winning chef Jeffrey C. MacDonald, 36, has been charged with the murder of his wife, 31-year-old Emma MacDonald, at the Hotel UMass on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus. According to police reports, MacDonald allegedly admitted to beating his wife to death with his hands, feet, and other objects, stating his intent to kill her. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening in Room 414 of the hotel, following a 911 call received at 7:42 p.m. Campus and Hadley police responded to the scene, where a violent struggle reportedly took place between MacDonald and officers. MacDonald was read his Miranda rights and later pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and assault and battery during a court appearance on Thursday. He was ordered held without bail and is scheduled for a competency evaluation before his next court date on May 12.
A witness staying in an adjacent room described hearing dull thuds earlier in the day, followed by a chaotic scene when police arrived. The witness reported hearing officers yelling at MacDonald to comply and seeing him led out of the hotel with a chef’s apron tangled around his ankles. Police found Emma MacDonald’s body with injuries consistent with a violent assault. MacDonald and his wife were both employees of UMass Amherst, though the reason for their presence in the hotel room remains unclear.
The case is under active investigation by the UMass Amherst Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit, and the Massachusetts Crime Scene Services Section.
