Bodega Worker Killed in NYC After Confrontation with Known Shoplifter

A 28-year-old bodega worker was fatally shot outside his family-owned store in Manhattan's East Village on Saturday night. Abdul Saleh was killed after an argument with a 28-year-old man, who had been previously banned from the store for theft and harassment. The shooting occurred just after 11:30 p.m. outside Sal's Deli & Grocery on Avenue B and E. 13th Street, according to police. Surveillance footage captured the confrontation, which began inside the store before escalating outside. Saleh, a father of two young children, was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, currently in Yemen with their children, was hospitalized after learning of his death. The suspect, known to the deli workers, had been barred from the store for nearly a year but continued to enter, according to Saleh's cousin, Basam Hussain. Hussain described the suspect as a repeat offender who frequently stole and harassed staff. Saleh had previously expressed concerns about crime in the area, speaking to reporters last year about the need for panic buttons in bodegas. The United Bodega Association had launched a $1.6 million program to install panic buttons in 500 city stores, aiming to improve response times to violent incidents. Saleh's death comes amid ongoing discussions about safety measures for bodega workers in New York City.
