The U.S. State Department has announced plans to release a limited-edition redesign of American passports to mark the nation's 250th anniversary in July. The new passports will feature a portrait of President Donald Trump, his signature, and text from the Declaration of Independence. The redesign is part of the Trump administration's broader 'America250' celebration, which includes various events and initiatives to commemorate the milestone.
The limited-edition passports will be the default option for applicants at the Washington Passport Agency, with an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 available. Applicants outside Washington D.C. or those applying online will receive the standard passport design. The back cover of the commemorative passports will feature a gold laminate American flag with the number 250 and 13 stars representing the original colonies.
The State Department emphasized that the new passports will maintain the same security features as the current 'Next Generation' passport, introduced in 2021. The redesign marks a departure from traditional passport artwork, which has typically featured historical scenes, cultural symbols, and iconic landmarks. The current passport includes illustrations of American landscapes and historical events across its pages.
The limited-edition passports are set to be released this summer, coinciding with the 250th anniversary celebrations. The State Department spokesperson, Tommy Pigott, stated that the passports will feature customized artwork and enhanced imagery while ensuring the highest security standards. The initiative is part of a series of events and programs organized by the America250 organization, including nationwide block parties and other commemorative activities.
