Alphanso Talley, the man accused of fatally shooting Chicago Police Officer John Bartholomew and wounding another officer at Swedish Hospital, was ordered detained without bail Thursday. The 27-year-old suspect, who had an outstanding warrant for armed robbery, allegedly hid a 10-millimeter handgun under his hospital gown and opened fire during a CT scan. Officer Bartholomew died from his injuries, while his 57-year-old partner remains hospitalized but responsive.
Prosecutors described Talley as calculated, noting he had lied about swallowing narcotics to gain hospital access. Surveillance footage showed him fidgeting under his gown before pulling the gun. After the shooting, Talley allegedly held hospital staff at gunpoint, stole badges, and attempted to escape before being apprehended nearby.
Family members and CPD officials attended the hearing, where Talley was reprimanded for giggling during proceedings. Prosecutors emphasized his extensive criminal history, including prior arrests for carjacking and armed robbery. Chicago Alderman Raymond Lopez criticized city leadership, warning of a "very brutal summer" if violent crime isn’t addressed.
Officer Bartholomew’s funeral arrangements were announced, with the Fraternal Order of Police noting his partner shows signs of recovery, including limb sensation and responsiveness.
