Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) has sparked debate after claiming she is one of the 535 most powerful people in the country due to her role as a congresswoman. During an appearance on the talk show Sherri, Crockett discussed the challenges she faces as a Black woman in politics, emphasizing the disrespect she believes she and other Black women encounter. She stated, 'I’m a Black woman in America. So I mean – I mean some people are just like, oh, but you’re a congresswoman. I’m a Black woman first.' Crockett argued that her position in Congress should shield her from disrespect, saying, 'I am one of the 535 most powerful people in this country, and for some reason you think we on the same level, but you going to disrespect me?'
Critics on social media quickly responded to her remarks. Journalist James Surowiecki noted that Crockett’s party does not control the House, questioning her claim to power. Actor Robert Sterling called her statement one of the funniest things he’s ever heard, suggesting that most congresspeople outside of key committees are politically expendable. Crockett has a history of controversial statements, including calling former President Donald Trump an 'enemy of the United States' and making remarks about Gov. Greg Abbott’s disability during a speech.
Crockett’s comments come amid ongoing tensions in Congress, particularly her public feud with former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). The debate over her remarks highlights broader discussions about representation, power, and respect in American politics.
