Explosives Found in Vehicle After Deadly Portland Health Club Crash

A man is dead after a vehicle crashed into the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland, Oregon, early Saturday morning, with authorities discovering multiple explosive devices inside the vehicle. The incident occurred shortly before 3 a.m. at the historic private club, which boasts over 21,000 members. Police confirmed the driver was found deceased inside the burning vehicle. Employees reported seeing the vehicle drive slowly around the building before crashing and catching fire. First responders, including Portland Fire & Rescue and the Portland Police Bureau (PPB), arrived to contain the blaze and secure the scene. Investigators found multiple incendiary devices and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in varying states of activation, some of which had partially detonated. The Portland Police Bureau’s explosive disposal unit, assisted by the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), is processing the scene. Police Chief Bob Day described the incident as "isolated" and not an act of domestic terrorism. The medical examiner’s office has not yet identified the deceased individual due to the ongoing risk of additional explosive devices. Reports suggest the suspect may have been a disgruntled former employee, though this has not been officially confirmed. The area was swept and secured, with additional public safety resources activated out of caution due to the timing near May Day and the club’s proximity to Providence Park.
