Supermodel and body positivity advocate Ashley Graham has criticized the growing popularity of GLP-1 weight loss injections, calling them a 'smack in the face' to the body positivity movement. In an interview with Marie Claire, Graham, 38, expressed frustration over the fashion and beauty industries' renewed emphasis on slimmer body types, reversing progress made in body acceptance.
Graham, who has been a prominent figure in the body positivity movement for over a decade, acknowledged the challenges posed by the trend. 'There was a pendulum that swung that was so body acceptance, positivity, everybody be who they want to be. And now it's going back this whole opposite way,' she said. She emphasized that the rise of GLP-1 drugs feels like a setback for women who have fought for representation and acceptance.
Despite the trend, Graham remains committed to her advocacy. 'Why would I stop now and why would I get angry about the work I've done?,' she questioned. She highlighted the ongoing presence of plus-size influencers and creators, noting that the drug trend won't erase the need for diverse representation. 'This drug isn't going to wipe out a whole statistic of women,' she added.
Graham's comments come amid broader discussions about Hollywood's obsession with weight loss and anti-aging treatments, with other celebrities like Kate Winslet also voicing concerns about industry pressures.
