Federal prosecutors have outlined evidence linking Jonathan Rinderknecht, the man accused of starting the devastating Palisades Fire in Los Angeles, to Luigi Mangione, the accused killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Court documents filed in April 2025 reveal that Rinderknecht, 30, searched terms like 'Free Luigi' and 'let’s take down all the billionaires' in December 2024, days before the fire began. Prosecutors allege he was driven by resentment toward the wealthy and viewed Mangione as a Robin Hood-like figure.
Rinderknecht, an Uber driver, was described by passengers as 'angry, intense, and driving erratically' on New Year's Eve 2024, ranting about capitalism and vigilantism. He allegedly started a fire on January 1, 2025, which smoldered underground before erupting into the deadly Palisades Fire on January 7, killing 12 people and causing $150 billion in damages. His trial is set to begin June 8, 2025.
Prosecutors argue Rinderknecht’s online searches, erratic behavior, and statements to investigators demonstrate his motive. In a January 24, 2025 interview, he reportedly said arson in the Palisades would stem from resentment of the rich, comparing it to Mangione’s alleged crime. Defense attorneys claim Rinderknecht is being scapegoated for the fire department’s failure to fully extinguish the initial blaze.
Rinderknecht has pleaded not guilty to federal arson charges. Prosecutors must convince the court to admit evidence of his relationships, political views, and admiration for Mangione as motive evidence. Legal experts note the circumstantial nature of the case, which hinges on tying these elements together.
