China's Wu Yize became the youngest World Snooker Champion in 36 years after defeating Shaun Murphy 18-17 in a thrilling final at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. The 22-year-old Wu, who led 10-7 overnight, overcame a late surge from Murphy to claim the title and the £500,000 prize. This victory makes Wu the second consecutive Chinese champion, following Zhao Xintong's win last year.
Murphy, 43, was aiming to end a 21-year wait for a second world title but fell short despite leading 12-10 after the first session. The match featured dramatic swings, including a 131 clearance by Murphy to level the score at 16-16. Wu ultimately sealed the win with an 85 break in the final frame.
During the match, play was briefly disrupted when an OnlyFans model, Sasha Swan, entered the playing area. Referee Rob Spencer restrained her before security intervened. Swan later posted a video on X (formerly Twitter), claiming she was ejected for attempting to streak. Additionally, Murphy expressed frustration over a ringing phone during his shot, urging spectators to silence their devices.
Wu dedicated his victory to his parents, acknowledging their support since he dropped out of school to pursue snooker. Murphy, despite the loss, praised Wu's potential, stating he had predicted the youngster would one day win the title.
