Rep. Tom Barrett (R-Mich.) introduced a resolution Thursday that would authorize military operations in Iran for 90 days, setting strict limits on U.S. involvement. The measure, which would sunset on July 30, allows President Donald Trump to use force to degrade Iran's nuclear program, enforce a naval blockade, and ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. However, it prohibits ground troops, nation-building, or occupying Iranian territory.
Barrett, an Army veteran, emphasized the need to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons while avoiding prolonged U.S. military engagement. 'Two things have been clear from the very beginning: Iran cannot be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon, and the United States of America cannot be dragged into another endless war,' he said. The legislation comes after the 60-day War Powers Resolution deadline expired on May 1, requiring congressional authorization for continued military action.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) has also vowed to introduce a similar measure in the Senate. The bill reflects growing bipartisan concerns over the scope and duration of U.S. military involvement in Iran, where fighting has been paused since a ceasefire agreement on April 8.
Former Deputy National Security Advisor KT McFarland highlighted Iran's history of non-compliance with nuclear agreements and the importance of 'snap inspections' for any future deal. She also noted China's interest in Iran's oil supply, which could influence diplomatic efforts ahead of the Trump-Xi summit.
