FBI Director Kash Patel is set to testify before the Senate Appropriations Committee on Tuesday, seeking a $12 billion budget for his agency as part of a broader $41 billion request for the Department of Justice (DOJ). The hearing comes amid ongoing scrutiny over Patel’s leadership, including allegations of misuse of FBI resources, erratic behavior, and performance issues.
Patel, along with the heads of the ATF, U.S. Marshals Service, and DEA, will defend the budget increase, which represents a $2 billion rise from the previous year. The FBI’s funding request is the largest among the agencies appearing before the committee.
Controversies Surrounding Patel
Patel has faced criticism over his attendance at Team USA’s hockey victory celebration in Italy in February, where he reportedly used FBI resources. An FBI spokesperson confirmed the trip was previously scheduled and that personal expenses would be reimbursed. Patel has also denied allegations of excessive drinking and job performance issues, as reported by The Atlantic. He has sued the publication for $250 million in damages, calling the report defamatory.
During a press conference last month, Patel dismissed negative media coverage, stating, ‘I never listen to the fake news mafia.’ He also vowed to take legal action against The Atlantic for the allegations.
Patel’s Defense of FBI Reforms
In his testimony, Patel is expected to highlight his efforts to modernize the FBI, including AI integration, infrastructure upgrades, and workforce improvements. He has framed these changes as responses to long-standing requests from lawmakers and stakeholders.
The hearing will also address security concerns following recent high-profile incidents, including the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and the third assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump last month.
