Tom Steyer’s campaign for California governor filed a complaint with the state’s Fair Political Practices Commission, accusing influencers supporting Xavier Becerra’s campaign of failing to disclose payments. The complaint alleges that two influencers, Jay Gonzalez and Maggie Reed, created pro-Becerra posts without proper disclosure. Reed denied receiving payment, while Becerra’s campaign maintains it has not paid influencers. Steyer’s campaign has relied heavily on paid influencers, according to recent filings.
The complaint claims Gonzalez produced 14 pro-Becerra posts on Instagram and Facebook after being hired by the campaign, only later editing them to acknowledge sponsorship. Reed, who posts as @mermaidmamamaggie, created four pro-Becerra posts but said she was not paid. Becerra’s campaign spokesman Jonathan Underland stated all online content is "entirely and purely organic."
Meanwhile, both Steyer and Becerra have criticized California’s power companies in the gubernatorial race, framing them as a shared enemy. Polls show both candidates leading the Democratic field, with voters expressing frustration over utility rates and service. A February survey found nearly 80% of California voters want government action to limit utility price increases.
