Louisiana State University (LSU) has announced the return of Ed Orgeron to its football program, this time as a special assistant for recruiting and defense under new head coach Lane Kiffin. The 64-year-old Louisiana native previously led LSU to a 15-0 season and a national championship in 2019 before being fired in 2021. Orgeron’s hiring reunites him with Kiffin, with whom he worked under Pete Carroll at USC in the early 2000s.
Kiffin expressed enthusiasm about Orgeron’s return, citing his recruiting prowess, particularly in Louisiana. "He brings us tremendous value with his ability to recruit elite players nationally, but especially the impact he can have for us recruiting the great state of Louisiana," Kiffin said in a statement. Orgeron’s coaching career began at Northwestern State as a player and later as a graduate assistant. He spent over a decade as an assistant at various schools, including Miami and Syracuse, before joining USC in 2001.
Orgeron and Kiffin’s professional relationship dates back to their time at USC, where Orgeron served as defensive line coach and later recruiting coordinator under Carroll. Kiffin, who started as tight ends coach, eventually became offensive coordinator. After winning two national championships at USC, Orgeron became head coach at Ole Miss in 2005, offering Kiffin a job, which he declined at the time. Kiffin later coached the Rebels from 2020 to 2025 before taking the LSU job.
The hiring addresses a perceived weakness in LSU’s previous regime under Brian Kelly, which struggled to maintain the program’s historical dominance in Louisiana recruiting. Some critics argue that Kelly, an "outsider," failed to connect with local talent as effectively as Orgeron, a native of the state. Kiffin’s decision to bring Orgeron aboard is seen as a strategic move to restore LSU’s recruiting edge and strengthen its defensive coaching staff.
