Airbnb has announced a major expansion of its services, introducing grocery delivery, car rentals, airport pickups, and exclusive FIFA World Cup experiences. The company is partnering with Instacart for grocery deliveries, Bounce for luggage storage, and Welcome Pickups for airport transportation. Additionally, Airbnb will soon offer in-app car rentals and has added thousands of new cultural and food experiences led by local experts.
The company is also leveraging AI to enhance user experience, including AI-powered review summaries and lodging comparisons. Airbnb’s chief executive, Brian Chesky, emphasized the company’s focus on AI-driven innovations during a recent earnings call. The expansion comes as Airbnb prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in 16 cities across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. The company’s chief financial officer, Ellie Mertz, stated that the World Cup is expected to be the largest event in Airbnb’s history.
Airbnb has been expanding beyond its original lodging model, adding boutique hotel bookings and experiences like private tours and chef-cooked meals. Some customers have questioned whether these changes stray too far from the company’s original purpose. Meanwhile, debates continue in California over the impact of short-term rentals on affordable housing supplies.
