Protesters clashed with ICE agents outside the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, New Jersey, where a hunger strike is underway. Demonstrators blocked a van attempting to leave the facility, alleging detainees are enduring poor conditions. Governor Mikie Sherrill has requested access to the facility, calling the reported conditions "unsafe, inhumane, and unconstitutional."
Congressman Rob Menendez Jr. and Senator Andy Kim visited the facility over the weekend, supporting detainees' claims of spoiled food, contaminated water, and inadequate medical care. Menendez remains at the facility to observe conditions firsthand. Kim reported meeting 18-year-old girls who would have graduated high school if not for their arrests.
In response, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson stated that detainees receive three meals a day, clean water, medical services, and access to legal and family communication. Protests have continued for three days, with demonstrators alleging excessive force by ICE agents, including the use of pepper spray and batons.
Governor Sherrill has long opposed private detention facilities and is advocating for the closure of Delaney Hall. She is coordinating with federal officials and advocates to monitor the situation and ensure humane conditions.
