Mexican authorities arrested the nephew of notorious drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman during a security operation on Tuesday. The suspect, identified as Isai “N”, was detained in Nogales, Sonora, near the U.S.-Mexico border, according to Omar Garcia Harfuch, Mexico’s Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection. Isai “N” faces extradition to the U.S. on drug trafficking charges.
Separately, Mexican officials seized 1,500 pounds of cocaine, 151 firearms, 363 magazines, and 18 grenades during a raid in Tapachula, Chiapas, near Mexico’s southern border with Guatemala. Harfuch stated the operations reflect Mexico’s ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks.
El Chapo, the co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, is serving a life sentence in a U.S. supermax prison in Colorado after being extradited in 2017. He was captured in 2016 following two high-profile prison escapes. Recent court records show he has requested a transfer back to Mexico, citing harsh prison conditions. The facility, known as the “Alcatraz of the Rockies,” has held other high-profile inmates, including the Unabomber and Boston Marathon bomber.
The Mexican government, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, has intensified anti-cartel operations in cooperation with the U.S., despite occasional diplomatic tensions. The two nations maintain a security partnership focused on intelligence sharing and extraditions.
