An Austrian court has sentenced a 21-year-old man to 15 years in prison for plotting a jihadist attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna in August 2024. The defendant, identified only as Beran A. in accordance with Austrian privacy laws, pleaded guilty to terrorism-related charges, including planning to target fans outside the Ernst Happel Stadium with knives or homemade explosives. The plot was thwarted, but Austrian authorities canceled all three scheduled concerts, devastating fans and Swift herself, who later expressed her grief over the cancellations.
Beran A. was found to have attempted to illegally purchase weapons, including a machine gun and hand grenade, and followed instructions from an Islamic State video to produce a small amount of the explosive triacetone triperoxide (TATP). Prosecutors also accused him of networking with other members of the Islamic State group ahead of the planned attack. The defendant apologized in court before the verdict was delivered.
The trial also involved two co-defendants, Arda K. and a third man detained in Saudi Arabia, who allegedly planned separate attacks in Middle Eastern cities. However, only Beran A. was charged in connection with the concert plot. The case highlights the ongoing threat of lone-wolf terrorism and the challenges of preventing such attacks.
