All train services to and from Heathrow Airport have resumed after a burst water main caused major disruptions earlier on Saturday. The incident led to no trains running on the Heathrow Express and Elizabeth Line for several hours, while the Piccadilly Line was also halted due to planned engineering works.
National Rail confirmed the lines had reopened but warned of delays of up to 15 minutes and cancellations on the Heathrow Express. The Elizabeth Line returned to good service, though the Piccadilly Line remains closed between Acton Town and all Heathrow terminals due to ongoing engineering work. Rail replacement buses are in place for affected passengers.
Heathrow Airport apologized for the inconvenience, stating services were starting to resume. The disruption followed a burst water main near the airport, which caused a fault with the signaling system, according to National Rail. The airport, the UK's busiest, handled a record 84 million passengers last year.
Passengers expressed frustration on social media, with some describing the situation as 'unbearable' due to long queues and a lack of information. Others reported being stranded and forced to take expensive taxis home. South Devon MP Caroline Voaden shared her experience on X, describing 'absolute carnage' at the airport, with overwhelmed staff and lost travelers.
