The House Ethics Committee is investigating Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-CA) over allegations of sexual misconduct, according to reports. The probe follows a New York Post article from April that claimed Gomez was seen kissing a congressional staffer from another office at a party in 2023. During the investigation, the committee reportedly uncovered additional allegations of misconduct.
Gomez issued a statement acknowledging personal mistakes outside his marriage but denied violating any laws or House ethics rules. He expressed regret for causing pain to his family and vowed to cooperate with the investigation. The congressman has represented California’s 34th Congressional District since 2017.
The investigation comes amid a wave of sexual misconduct allegations on Capitol Hill. Earlier this year, Reps. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) and Tony Gonzales (R-TX) resigned after facing similar allegations. Swalwell, a former ally of Gomez, suspended his gubernatorial campaign amid accusations from multiple women. Gonzales resigned after admitting to an affair with a staffer who later died by suicide. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) also resigned following ethics violations.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has not publicly commented on Gomez’s case. The Ethics Committee has not confirmed the investigation, but CNN reported it is in the early stages.
