State Sen. Scott Wiener (D-CA) has advanced to the general election in California's 11th Congressional District, securing the top spot in the primary race to succeed former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. With roughly 49% of the vote counted, Wiener led with 41.3% of the vote, according to the Associated Press. San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan and tech entrepreneur Saikat Chakrabarti are competing for the second spot in the general election, with Chan at 28.6% and Chakrabarti at 14.9%.
The race marks the first competitive contest for the district in nearly four decades, featuring 11 candidates. Pelosi, who did not endorse Wiener or Chakrabarti, backed Chan late last month and appeared at a campaign event wearing a T-shirt with Chan's name. Wiener, a Harvard-educated attorney, has championed LGBT rights, climate change policies, and fair housing during his tenure in the state Senate. He also authored over 100 laws since his election in 2016.
The district, entirely within San Francisco, has been represented by Pelosi since 1987. The top two vote-getters will advance to the November election. Wiener received the endorsement of the California Democratic Party at its convention in February. Chakrabarti, a former campaign manager for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, entered politics through Sen. Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign.
