Los Angeles Angels outfielder Jo Adell allowed a home run on Tuesday when a fly ball struck his head and bounced over the outfield wall. The play, which occurred during a game against the Colorado Rockies, drew comparisons to a similar defensive blunder by José Canseco in 1993. Adell, who had previously made headlines for robbing three home runs in a single game, faced criticism for the unusual error.
Adell attempted to catch a deep fly ball hit by TJ Rumfield in the fourth inning. The ball grazed his glove before striking his helmet and rolling over the fence, resulting in a home run. Rumfield initially stopped at second base before the umpires confirmed the ruling. Adell later addressed the media, acknowledging the mistake but emphasizing his defensive experience. 'It looks like I’ve never played in the field before, which is disappointing, because it’s beyond the truth,' he said. 'I’m the only one that really knows what happened.'
The Angels, who have struggled this season, lost the game 8-2. Adell went hitless in four at-bats, striking out twice. The team has faced criticism for its performance under owner Arte Moreno, who purchased the franchise in 2003. The Angels have not won a World Series since 2002.
