Cara Delevingne has opened up about her struggles with drug addiction and the turning points that led to her sobriety. The 33-year-old actress and model revealed in a recent interview on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast that she began experimenting with drugs at the age of 14, eventually selling them to support her own habit. She admitted to using ketamine, GHB, and cocaine, among other substances, to cope with emotional turmoil and mental health challenges.
Delevingne described how her drug use escalated, leading to severe hallucinations and suicidal thoughts. She recalled a particularly harrowing experience where she believed her father was God and her mother was the devil, prompting her to think she needed to kill her mother to save the world. At 15, she suffered a mental breakdown and later turned to Burning Man Festival as a turning point in her life.
The actress also detailed her daily use of GHB, which she took to knock herself out, followed by cocaine to stay awake. She suffered seizures that ultimately forced her to confront her addiction. Delevingne had planned to get sober after her 30th birthday but realized she needed medical detox due to her physical dependence on GHB. The viral photos of her looking disheveled at Burning Man in 2022 were taken shortly after one of these seizures.
Delevingne explained that her initial drug use was a way to escape feelings of inadequacy and pressure, as well as to cope with her mother's illness and childhood trauma. She found temporary relief and a sense of connection through drugs but eventually realized the severe consequences of her addiction. She checked herself into a 12-step program in 2022, marking a significant step in her recovery journey.
