Ohio State University has reached a $100 million settlement with nearly 300 former students who accused the school's former doctor, Richard Strauss, of sexually abusing them between 1978 and 1998. The agreement, ratified by the university's board, resolves claims from 279 of the 280 survivors still in litigation, following years of legal battles.
Background and Allegations
A 2019 independent report found Strauss abused at least 177 male students, including athletes, under the guise of medical examinations. The report also revealed that university staff knew of the abuse as early as 1979 but failed to act. Strauss, who died by suicide in 2005, worked for Ohio State's athletic department and medical staff for nearly two decades.
Legal and Institutional Response
The settlement follows earlier agreements totaling over $60 million with 317 survivors. Ohio State's president, Ravi Bellamkonda, expressed gratitude to the survivors for coming forward, calling them part of the university's community. The school has faced lawsuits since 2018, alleging deliberate indifference to the abuse.
Ongoing Investigations
Recent allegations, including one from a former high school student, have expanded the scope of the scandal. Strauss reportedly continued abusing students even after being removed from athletic and student health roles in 1996. The university maintains it is committed to finalizing the settlement details and supporting survivors.
